"I never comment on referees and I'm not going to break the habit of a lifetime for that prat."
Ron Atkinson

The four English professional Leagues contain 96 teams making for a huge programme of football each weekend. Add to this hundreds of semi-professional and amateur clubs and you can see why many consider English football to be the best in the world.

The English professional leagues are:

Premiership
Championship
League 1
League 2

Below these divisions are many smaller leagues feeding into the Nationwide Conference, the top teams of which are promoted to Nationwide Division Three at the end of the season.

Each year English clubs compete for the FA Cup, the oldest domestic cup competition in the world. Over 600 teams compete for the FA Cup making for some of the most exciting matches in the football calendar. A domestic league cup is also contested over the season.

Scotland also has a strong league structure, contesting four leagues too.

Scottish Premier League (SPL)
Scottish Division One
Scottish Division Two
Scottish Division Three

These leagues are smaller than their English counterparts. Scotland also has two cup competitions to compete for.
