Poker Books

"I am sorry I have not learnt to play at cards. It is very useful in life: it generates kindness, and consolidates society."
Samuel Johnson

On this page you will find a selection of poker books. These books on poker all feature in Mister Tips' personal library, the short reviews are my opinions on how useful they are to a poker player - particularly an online poker player.

I hope you find them enjoyable and helpful. All the money I have "invested" in books on poker has been repaid tenfold with the knowledge I have acquired from them. I can only recommend them to you in the hope you will find them as helpful as I have.

Super System

Doyle Brunson's Super System

This is an all time classic - the "Poker Bible". Containing advice from poker greats Doyle Brunson, "Crazy" Mike Caro, David Reese, Joey Hawthorne, David Sklansky and Bobby Baldwin. It covers draw poker, seven card stud and other games as well as Texas Hold'em. The most interesting aspect of this book is the section on no limit holdem. If you want to play no limit this book is a must. Buy Super System here.

Internet Hold'Em

Internet Texas Holdem: Winning Strategies from an Internet Pro

Written by Matthew Hilger, this is a fascinating insight into the world of online poker. Its focus is entirely on beating online games and it has many good tips to use in the online poker room that you won't find in other books. If you fancy yourself as an internet pro then this is the book for you! Buy Internet Texas Hold'em here.

Poker Theory

Theory of Poker: A Professional Poker Player Teaches you how to Think like one

A poker classic. David Sklanksy teaches the theory of poker in a mathematically orientated way. There is a wealth of valuable information in this book for players of all levels - although I think more advanced players will get more out of it. Great book if you have a reasonable grounding in maths. Buy The Theory of Poker here.

Pro Poker

Play Poker Like the Pros

In contrast to the above book, Play Poker Like the Pros adopts a more people orientated view of the game. Phil Hellmuth is a master of the game and he teaches you how to get into the head of your opponent. He even has a section on internet play so you get a view of all sides of the game. An excellent book. Buy Play Poker Like The Pros here.

Holdem Poker

Hold'em Poker: A Complete Guide to Playing the Game

This was one of the first poker books I bought. Although it isn't very long, it contains a lot of good information. David Sklansky presents all the tips you'll need to tighten up your beginner's game and start turning a profit. The book is about limit holdem so if you are looking to play other forms of the game this probably isn't for you. Buy Hold'em Poker here.

Tournament Poker

Tournament Poker for Advanced Players

Sklansky does it again! If you do not know poker you may be surprised at how differently you should be playing in a tournament when compared to a cash game. If you are already an experienced player and want to hone your tournament play then this is the book for you. Buy Tournament Poker for Advanced Players here.

Winning Poker

Caro's Fundamental Secrets of Winning Poker

"Crazy" Mike Caro is a fascinating chap with a very interesting approach to the game of poker. This book is well worth a read for anyone who wants to learn more about the game and who would like a different perspective on it. Caro teaches you about knowing yourself as well as knowing your opponent and also gives great general advice on the game. Buy Caro's Fundamental Secrets of Winning Poker here.
